"The Pictures Generation, 1974-1984 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In the early 70's a group of young artists (I [David Salle] was one of them) challenged the minimalist/conceptual hegemony by embracing imagery in all its complexity and complicity. Curator Douglas Eklund traces the "Pictures" sensibility back to its roots at Cal Arts, as well as its later flowering in New York among a handful of now quite recognizable names: Sherman, Levine, Prince, Kruger, Simmons, Welling, et al. The tone is witty, subversive and acerbic, but some pieces are suffused with a fragile romantic longing; the work in this lovely and nostalgic show has as a common theme the loss of innocence, both as individuals and as a culture."
