It's that time of year again... time to load up on your dubbed out psych-rock from Not Not Fun for the summertime. I don't know if they do this on purpose but it always seems to be around this time of year when they put out the best stuff. Sun Araw's double-LP opus On Patrol rides on the same rhythms as his past work. It's completely what you expect to hear, but somehow Cameron Stallones manages to run a different theme through each of his albums. This one is all patience and groove, dropping the heavily dug-in funk of Heavy Deeds and stretching it's legs for the nearly 1 1/2 hour ride. Patience is a necessity, not a virtue. On Patrol's post-apocalyptic outlaw theme show's its face in the artwork and never lets up. This isn't barbecue music, but if you give it the chance you'll find yourself lost in On Patrol's hazy world all summer.
Sun Araw - Deep Cover
Make It Real showcases the best kind of progression a band can make. With the addition of Cameron Stallones to the line-up, this album moves Pocahaunted (just slightly) out of the realm of meandering drone collages into the more listenable world of meandering dubbed-out funk. Don't get me wrong, the detached dual vocal caterwauling is still front and foremost, but with this album its securely grounded by the backing bands deep, dare I say, Sun Araw-esque grooves.
Pocahaunted - Touch You
This one's the kicker. Magic Lantern take everything that's great about any Not Not Fun band and stirs it in pot of deep, heavy stoner-rock grooves. Sun Araw and Pocahaunted are just provisionary - preparing your ears for the ear slaughtering of Platoon turned up loud. This album will make you sweat.
