Gonjasufi: A Sufi & A Killer

Every once in a while something comes along that just redefines your concept of music. Two years ago, Flying Lotus showed up on the radar for a lot of people and bent minds with his Dilla-in-Outer-Space beats. Accompanying Flying Lotus on at least one track from his Warp debut, Los Angeles, was a man called Gonjasufi. Now Flying Lotus, along with The Gaslamp Killer and Mainframe, has produced a debut album for Gonjasufi that's easily moved to the top of many best of lists for 2010 upon first listen.

Gonjasufi can conveniently be called a hip-hop artist but their is so much more going on here to just call it hip-hop. 15 Years ago you may have called it trip-hop but, drawing from dub, rock, folk, blues, punk, gospel, pop, electronic, funk, soul, psych, and perhaps most heavily, middle-eastern music, this album clearly defies simple categorization. To put it simply, A Sufi & A Killer is a bugged out head trip through music history that points distinctly towards the future. As Die Antwoord would artfully put it, "this is some next-level shit."
