I know almost nothing about the artists featured on The Minimal Wave Tapes: Vol.1 but that's what makes a release like this so exciting - everything here is completely fresh to the ears!

The Minimal Wave movement (full disclosure: I just looked it up on Wikipedia) was a late 70's-early 80's electronic music movement prominent in the U.S. and Europe. Most of the artists used synths and drum machines and followed a D.I.Y. ethos, using lo-fi recording techniques and making their own fliers and artwork. Most of the songs featured on the comp. sound similar to the popular music of the time but with a darker tinge in tone and songwriting. Think a lo-fi Kraftwerk meets glossy, disco-era Blondie. All in all, just good stuff. Stones Throw is really getting good at branching out and finding awesome comps. and reissues to add to their already heavy-hitting hip-hop roster
