Arthur Russell: The Sleeping Bag Sessions

Wow. I'm probably the billionth person to say this, but I'm absolutely floored at the amount of amazing music Arthur Russell was able to create in his much too short lifetime. The Sleeping Bag Sessions is a collection of disco, early hip-hop and all-around stellar dance jams that were created on Arthur's own Sleeping Bag imprint from 1981-1986. The tracklist would suggest that this a compilation of works by "various artists," but this is really all Arthur Russell. If you're at all interested in the roots of hip-hop and modern dance music (ie. Steinski, Talking Heads and old-school hip-hop from the east coast) this is a must have record.
